Understanding GST in India
GST Inclusive vs. GST Exclusive
Understanding the difference between inclusive and exclusive rates is crucial for accurate billing and avoiding legal accounting mistakes:
- GST Exclusive: The tax is not included in the displayed price of goods or services. The tax amount will be mathematically added on top of the base price to reach the final invoice value. (Most common in B2B transactions).
- GST Inclusive: The final quoted price or Maximum Retail Price (MRP) already factors in the GST. No more taxes are added at the checkout. (Most common in consumer retail & B2C transactions).
Current GST 2.0 Tax Slabs
- 0% (Nil Rated): Essential commodities like fresh fruits, unbranded vegetables, medical care, and education.
- 5% (Lower Slab): Everyday essentials like packaged food, toiletries, and affordable clothing/footwear (below ₹2,500).
- 18% (Standard Slab): Consumer durables like refrigerators, air conditioners, mobile phones, small cars, and professional services.
- 40% (Luxury & Sin Goods): Luxury cars, large engine motorcycles, carbonated soft drinks, and tobacco products.
How to Calculate GST Manually
Exclusive Calculation (To Add GST): GST Amount = (Base Price × Rate%) / 100
Inclusive Calculation (To Remove GST): Base Price = Total Price / (1 + [Rate% / 100])
Inclusive Calculation (To Remove GST): Base Price = Total Price / (1 + [Rate% / 100])
